Whether open joint or closed joint systems are desired, in the recommended rainscreen system, the joints serve as the attachment point for the monolithic exterior skin. Backer Rod and sealant can be put in the joint, or left open as desired, and it does not effect the ventilation of the facade.
In the past, some architects have been hesitant to specify rain screens and cutain walls where foot traffic and patron interaction occur, fearing that fingers could become stuck in the facade. In the case of the recommended system, the monolithic face attachments allow for consistent joint control, with backer rod and sealant acting as a dressing to this controlled and limited area. The attachment plates overlap, and prevent penetration, while allowing proper ventilation.
